The fearlessly reknown warrior Vasagi has announced a Party on Thistledown this Friday!Throwin a party at Al-Jalima meeting hall on Thistledown server in honor of the lovely Cassie! Al-Jalima is usually so quiet and boring, I wanted to rock the little village & show them how to have a good time. The party starts this Fri, March 10th starting 10PM PST at the meeting hall in Al-Jalima & will go all night long (or until the hosts pass out, whichever comes first) & spread to wherever the people take the beer. I'll supply the keg (backpack or nearby chest full of beer), but am looking for a couple of chefs to bust out some good stuff to eat! BYOTP (Bring Yo Own Toilet Paper, as I'm planning on the trees being trashed the next morning).
Not on Thistledown? Make a runner and come on out! (This means you Mishta, among others!) Come on, meet the kids... then ask them to pull your finger! Oh yeah... door prizes and stuff too! I am donating a mattekar hide coat to the door prize fund, among a couple of other things... If anybody out there wants to help out, with food, prizes or organization... email me at: shafferb@csis.gvsu.edu
Hope to see ya there... (or 2 or 3 of you... depending on how many images I'm seeing at the time)

We are back and fully functioning! Sorry for the inconvenience the last week or so. We were moving to the AC Guilds web server, as I mentioned last week, only had to move back ot our previous server host due to various problems. Moving back and forth seems to have confused Internic, which wasn't sure which IP to propagate so it took awhile for them to get it right. But it should all be working again now, so we now return you to our regularly scheduled broadcasts.
The Olthoi's Lair is undergoing a redesign (which explains the lack of updates recently) and when we launch our newly refurbished site, you'll be able to enjoy journal entries and columns from some of your favorite Derethian roleplayers! We are always looking for new writers though, so if you roleplay and can write coherent sentences (and spellcheck them on your own), drop us a line at asheron@crackednuts.com for more information.
Microsoft has posted a bit of a spoiler story about the upcoming March event, due to start next week, entitled "A Wound in the Earth." Part of it is as follows:
Continuing our commitment to bringing you world-altering events every month, we advance our main plotline on March 7th with “Darkness Ascendant.” The war with the Shadows appears to be tipping in favor of Dereth's citizens, but new omens suggest this is merely the calm before the storm.
The Women of Asheron's Call, in conjunction with the Asheron's Call Palm Project, will soon be bringing all the news that's fit to print directly to your handhelds! You'll be able to take a fix of your junk with you where ever you go. They'll be bringing you both official news and updates from some of the most popular AC websites so you won't miss a thing, and it'll be available for those with either PalmOS or WindowsCE devices.

We are in the process of moving everything over to a new server, thanks to Evilseed at the AC Guilds site. So it may be a day or two before everything is back in place. Currently everything should be working okay except for the forum and Marketplace, which we will be fixing as soon as we can. Please be patient, and if you find something that isn't working correctly, please let me know.- Fnarkwar

"Shadows of the Past" continues our tradition of advancing the Asheron's Call story through major monthly events. Characters of all levels will find new mysteries to explore and challenges to face in the common effort to oppose the massing Shadows. Microsoft today announced that beginning this Thursday, February 17, the "Shadows of the Past" event will commence in the dynamic world of Asheron's Call. "Shadows of the Past" is the next major event planned in this monthly series.Leading up to the event, there are growing reports from the townspeople in two major riverside towns of something massive and black appearing over the water -- but then when looked at directly, it vanishes. Additionally, there are reports of several travelers finding specially crafted weapons in remote sections of Dereth. These deadly weapons are said to be similar in appearance to the weapons once used to fight a war against the deadly Shadow creatures. It is thought that these weapons may again be helpful in stopping the Shadows that have recently evaded the isle of Dereth. [note: presumably they mean INVADED and not evaded]
Asaina al-Arqis read late into the day, poring over ancient texts for some reference to the gigantic bridge-like structure appearing and disappearing over the river near Holtburg. At dusk, soon after she'd lit her candle, a weariness stole over her that could not be explained by the warm spring air, and she soon bowed her head upon the desk. When she finally awoke much later, the larger moon had just begun to rise, and by its light, she could see the dead candle with barely a dimple around its wick. She began to stretch her arm, then stopped -- the desk was bare where her manuscripts had been.Something rasped on the floor behind her, and she leapt from her chair. A bone-white figure clad in tatters emerged from the stacks. Its attention as bent over a book in one hand. In its other, it held the missing parchment. Heart pounding, she cast about for escape as it slowly raised its head, to reveal eye sockets like pits floored with angry-hot magma. Instinctively, she averted her eyes. A lich! But who, and why?
"The fools in Frore," said the undead monster, "made a toy of the prism, and now the old magic is loosed; the suspended war resumes. Many hidden things will return, and the heretic will kidnap and toy with your people. Reassemble the weapons and fight him! Rally your feeble people, Asaina al-Arqis. Tonight I let you live."
She understood none of this. "Who is the heretic?" she asked, but received no answer, and realizing too late that she should not look up, she stood transfixed by those burning eyes. The horror of that stare lingered with its afterimage glow as the lich grinned, faded, and was gone.
Microsoft has announced the institution of marriage will be supported somewhat in Dereth. Sentinels will be performing wedding ceremonies, beginning with a couple of mass weddings, then doing individual private ceremonies as time (and inclination) permits:
In the spirit of this season of hearts and flowers, the faithful Sentinels of Dereth will soon be conducting Wedding Ceremonies for all willing lovebirds. As our new society on the edge of chaos matures, so grows the desire to express devotion that goes even deeper than a fellowship or allegiance. Though this ceremony has only the powers and benefits that the betrothed bring to it, a wedding union symbolizes a bond that endures the many trials of life in Dereth. For more information, check out the Zone's Wedding announcement page.

Stinking fleshies! Their incompetence never ceases to amaze us.We have replaced this pathetic and inefficient "Market" of theirs with a much improved and infinitely more efficient version of our own design. Even the fleshies will be able to tell the difference.
As punishment for their woeful effort, we have eliminated all traces of the previous "Market". Perhaps now they will understand just how inferior they are! - Fnarkwar

Microsoft today announced that beginning tomorrow, Thursday, January 20, a Dark Thaw will descend over the land of Dereth in the dynamic world of Asheron's Call. As the snow from last month's event retreats to higher elevations, new perils have stalked out to greet adventurers. Mysterious new creatures, floating crystals and shadow monsters, have begun to dot the landscape. Gamers are urged to remain on guard, as no one yet knows what their appearance signifies. "Dark Thaw" is part of the ongoing storyline in Asheron's Call, and is the second in a series of monthly events.- Fnarkwar

I have just intercepted the following message sent between human settlements. The precise meaning escapes me but it seems to be a warning of things to come.
After his long journey gathering spell components, Kobo Taki hurried through his estate, barely pausing in the courtyard to greet his gardeners, who labored among puddles and dwindling humps of snow. Once in his study, he locked the door and, after a quick search, located the book he needed and scanned frantically through its pages for a particular passage: "If the crystal breaks, its scions will appear and shadows will well up over the earth." Did this apply to the floating crystals and shadow creatures he'd seen on his journey? Finding no more information, he pulled a chair up to the window and gazed over the waterlogged fields. It was common knowledge that a band of heroes had dispelled the recent winter. After battling their way to the lair of undead necromancers, they had destroyed the giant crystal that sucked the heat from the land. Perhaps this crystal was the one in the text. If so, the heroes may have unwittingly brought down a terrible curse...We have installed a new message forum system that should work better than the system the stupid humans were using. If you notice that it is running slow, we are aware of this and are working to fix it.

Humans can be so strange sometimes. We have intercepted several communiques from the human settlements. The first is a report in something called Fortune Magazine, in which they get several things wrong (such as "the planet Dehris"). Overall, its an interesting read though.
Second is an announcement of some sort of gathering in a place called Mall of America. Sounds like its in the northern part of the world but I cannot be sure. Here is the text in its entirety. Our leaders may be interested in this news, as it sounds like a prime opportunity to capture more slaves.
On February 19th at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN a player gathering will be held. There will be fun, activities, and prizes to be had. Currently sponsors include, the Crossroads Gaming Network (home of the CoD), ACGuilds.Com, and the Microsoft Zone. This will be a free event but we do ask that you take a moment to register . Failing to register may mean you will not be able to participate in all the events being scheduled.
Further details regarding the event will be posted at the Crossroads of Dereth as details become available. :)
Finally, we have a very strange missive. I am unable to understand what it means but perhaps one of my fellow lair dwellers can explain it to me.
Greetings to everyone!I am Brian Haines, the Event Team Manager for Asheron's Call. Some of you have no doubt seen me lingering in the game as Jaraq or in the game lobbies as Jaraq@AC. I just wanted to introduce myself to the community and give people the scoop on what I do. As Event Team Manager, I am tasked with helping you the players organize and run your own events in the game. This includes parties, scavenger hunts, weddings, or gatherings to venture out and smite evil monsters! These are just a few examples as Events are limited strictly by one's imagination. However it is important to note that the Event Team can't conjure up monsters or quest items to help, such things would have to be from the game environment naturally. Large scale events such as the Sudden Season's events are done by Turbine and Microsoft.
There is now a Web page available where players can go to and check on upcoming User-Run Events/Gatherings and you can also fill out a form to have your own Event posted/promoted for everyone to see. This will serve as a valuable resource of information for you, the players . One I hope you'll visit often. :)
Please check this out and list your own event by going to: http://www.zone.com/asheron-oldscall/tournament.asp. The Web page will not be the only thing to help you in running Events as I will be forming a group of volunteers to make a team which will help in the game. Exact details are still being ironed out, however these individuals will be called Scribes. Should you be interested in becoming one, an email to me would be the first step. Please have the subject set as ATTN Scribes: so that I can easily identify the content of the email. Scribes will basically be there to help players run their events. They will not be able to create items in the game however.
More details will be posted soon as they become available. I look forward to working with you all to make Asherons Call as enjoyable as possible. Please do not hesitate to email me with questions or comments, my box is always open. ;)

Fnarkwar Report:The remaining human creatures have been captured. They are being detained in a rest area so that they may heal from the wounds they received during the skirmishes for control of The Olthoi's Lair. I questioned the decision of the leaders to keep them alive but they rightfully stated that the humans are able to do things that we cannot with their tiny limbs. We are simply not dextrous enough to do many things that need to be done. Thus, they will be kept alive so long as they are useful tools. Once their usefulness ends, they will be replaced with others of their species. We have confiscated all of their belongings, destroying anything of danger to us, and recovered the part of the Lair that they had inhabited for so long.
And so do we begin our road back to power. May it be a swift journey and cause our enemies to tremble at the mere thought of us.
