Review: KISS Psycho Circus: The Nightmare Child  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Eric Lopez
When people think of the band Kiss, they might think of things usually associated with their music: strange makeup, simplistic '70s thud rock and multiple farewell tours. You probably wouldn't expect a first person shooter but that's exactly what Third Law Interactive has given us. Third Law has chosen to modify the increasingly popular Lithtech engine for their game, and the marketing literature promises fast and furious gameplay even under relatively low system requirements. Let's take a closer look, shall we?

Review: Icewind Dale  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Eric Lopez
It’s a great time to be a role-playing gamer. For the past couple of years, we have been treated to several RPG epics. Among the most critically acclaimed titles in recent times are Fallout, Baldur’s Gate and Torment. Coincidentally, Black Isle Studios, a company whose name has become synonomous with quality RPGs, has worked on all of those games in one way or another. Though there were some bumps in their early days (initial QA work on Fallout 2 left a lot to be desired), there’s no question as to the caliber of work they produce. With that, let’s take a look at their latest effort – Icewind Dale.

Review: Diablo II  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Eric Lopez
As I started composing my review of Diablo 2, I wondered if it wasn't a wasted effort. Previews of every aspect of the game have been available at dozens of game sites for a couple of years. With 2 million units in worldwide distribution as of this writing, a review would seem superfluous. The masses have already made their decision. My local software store ordered several cases of Diablo 2 for the initial launch, and people were lined up out the door to pick up the game they've been waiting four long years to play. For two weeks, the shelf space reserved for Diablo 2 was vacant, as copies were plucked straight out of the shipping boxes long before they reached the shelves. Blizzard already has a smash hit on their hands and will probably be on PC Data's Top Ten list for the next year. Still, I've got a job to do so let's get started.

Review: Vampire: The Masquerade  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Eric Lopez
There are plenty of pen and paper RPGs available in a wide variety of settings, but for some reason, the majority of these worlds were never adapted for computer gaming. Take a moment to consider computer RPGs and you'll probably recall dozens of titles based on the AD&D license. With a few rare exceptions, nearly all computer RPGs take place in a world of swords and sorcery. Over the past two years, an edgy startup by the name of Nihilistic Software has quietly been working on Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption, an RPG set in the romantic and dangerous world of vampire society. It's an ambitious project, but one that ultimately has a bittersweet taste.

Review: Majesty  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Eric Lopez
We truly live in an age of excess where quantity, not quality, matters in our society. This is especially evident in the entertainment industry where movies and computer games are seemingly excreted rather than presented to the public in an effort to capture a piece of the almighty dollar share. But every now and then a gem emerges from the flotsam that so captivates your heart, you're hard pressed to find any fault with it whatsoever, and you walk away feeling a little more optimistic about the state of the industry. Majesty - the fantasy kingdom sim by Cyberlore Studios is one of these gems.

Back when I was a kid, I remember being enthralled with my BMX bicycle (a Mongoose , no less) and racing through the woods with my friends or trying our best to perform tricks on our very own half-pipe we built. One day we raced to a deep ravine near our neighborhood, and I was dared to make a run down this treacherous hill and splash into the water below. Trying to be the big tough guy, I accepted the challenge and began to ease my bike down this steep 75-foot cliff. I picked up speed and lost control maybe 15 feet into my run. Luckily the hill was mostly sand sprinkled with gravel and wasn’t badly injured as I tumbled all the way down and into the water below. When I finally made it back to the top, my friends were still laughing.

Review: Soldier Of Fortune  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Atomic
Raven Software has delivered some great titles in the recent past. Games like Hexen II and Heretic II are of most memorable note. They’ve done extensive work with the Quake II engine for these most recent projects, from a straight adaptation to a complete reworking of the Quake II code. For their latest shooter, Soldier of Fortune, they’ve gone WAY past all that. To parents screaming video games breed contempt and violence, Raven gives them the finger.

Review: Urban Chaos  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Atomic
Remember dumping quarters into arcade games like Double Dragon and loving the fact that you could pick up a baseball bat and knock some sense into a group of bad guys? Eidos Interactive and Mucky Foot have teamed up to bring this sort of in-your-face action to the PC. All in all, they’ve done a bang-up job of it. Guns, grenades, bats and knives are just some of the havoc-wreaking devices you’ll find in Urban Chaos, a title which provides a level of interactivity unseen in any gaming environment before it.

Review: System Shock 2  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Atomic
Very rarely do games come along that defy solid classification. Back in 1994, when Looking Glass released the original System Shock, many gamers passed over it as being another Doom clone. Unfortunately for them, they missed one of gaming’s greatest achievements. The original was not merely a shooter; it also borrowed role-playing and adventure game elements as well. Since then, no game in recent memory has matched the depth and freshness - perhaps with the exception of Half-Life - of that delicious slice of gaming history.

Yep, I realize at the time this review comes out, the game isnt even on the shelves yet. Doesnt that make this a preview the Dragons? Nope, this is a review of the final code. Mostly a review of the multiplayer aspects and I will come back in a week or two and add in the single player in depth review. I was able to log hours yesterday at a local cybercafe with Aaron of Westwood studios playing some single player and a heck of alot of multi-player. I was able to solicit comments from 30+ other players present to form a real good opinion about the game and its multi-player (and some single player) aspects.

Review: Mortyr  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Atomic
Sometimes you get so wrapped up in anticipating a title, that when the game finally ships, you rush right out and get it. This was how I felt about Mortyr, until I actually installed it on my hard drive. One of the first titles I ever played on the PC was Wolfenstein, which, at the time boasted unprecedented graphics and action. With the announcement of Mortyr, I thought I’d be having a blast taking on the Nazis once again. As it turns out, I should have left this one on the shelf.

Ok, I’m a huge mythos buff. I have liked the ancient mythology of ages past for as long as I can remember. So when I got the chance to review this title I was really looking forward to it. Interplay has put out some great titles over the years and this latest offering from then and 140 East looked to be right up my alley.

Review: Dungeon Keeper 2  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Atomic
I liked the first Dungeon Keeper. The evil creatures, the strategic dungeon design, the slaps that motivate - they all came together and added up to a game that was not only challenging, but also immensely fun. Imagine my excitement when I purchased Dungeon Keeper 2; this past year had so many awesome yet not completely ground-breaking sequels, I was pleasantly blessed with more gaming goodness from some of my all time favorites. Dungeon Keeper 2 was the best of those summer sequels, hands down.

Review: Demise  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Jason "Virgil" Smith
Introduction
I wasn't sure what to expect when I sat down with my brand new copy of Demise, a new game from Artifact Entertainment. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised. Demise is a very addictive dungeon crawl, along with a nice plot and backstory. It's balanced well, at least as much as I ever saw, with an emphasis on exploration and atmosphere and very light on 'twitch reflexes'.

Remember Tom Cruise flipping bottles around his back while mixing drinks in Cocktail? Or how about Isaac serving up some easy flowing advice with every drink on The Love Boat? Did you ever dream of trying to walk in their shoes for a night? Part entertainer, part psychiatrist, part philosopher, and all bartender. Well Last Call isn't the answer to your prayers. But if you just want to test your knowledge of popular drink recipes while under the clock, and meet up with a handful of colorful characters stepping in as your patrons, you may be looking in the right place.

You're up late working on a puzzle with pieces spread out all over the table. You call it a night and go to bed. When you get up the next morning you discover your cat has decided to curl up right in the middle of your work area and, at the sound of your approach, scurries off the table, scattering puzzle pieces everywhere. Or it's your 6 year old spilling half the milk out of his bowl of cereal into the middle of your work. Or you simply dropped a few pieces on the floor as you were sorting them into groups only to have them stick to the bottom of your shoe and get carried out the front door.

You're sneaking your way through the dark city streets, intent on reaching the gates to the manor. But between you and your goal is a hulking city guard. He snorts, shuffles and complains about the coffee. Silently, you load one of your water arrows, draw back your bow, and douse the torch near his head. You switch to your trusty blackjack and with one blow send him into dreamland. Quickly, you pick the lock to the gate and move on.

Not your daddy's Stratego
I first heard about this game at GenCon last August and I found the description of it intriguing. I'm not all that into wargames and the original Stratego never really interested me, but throw just about anything related to the fantasy genre at me and I'm a happy camper. And that's what this game is, its the classic Stratego with a fantasy twist. Only its much more than that.

Review: Blaze & Blade  7:11 AM CDT - Posted By Azeraphel
Take that, vile crustacean!Woe unto these melon-headed heroes.

Stuck somewhere in the limbo between a classic Squaresoft game and the eternal suck of the Stygian Abyss lies Blaze and Blade, a rather uninspired title by T&E Soft. This anime-styled sword and sorcery action-adventure comes up decidedly short in the areas of anime, style, sword, sorcery, action, and adventure.
