Article: Women In A Macho Man's World 7:14 AM CDT - Posted By Cassie
Several weeks ago, I was made aware of an article on girl gamers over on Halflife.net, written by Shirow. Since most articles about girl gamers are written by women, I hurried over to take a gander at what a male's point of view might be. Color me oh-so-surprised to find that this article was one of the most back-assward, misogynistic views of women that I've read in a very long time. |
Article: Will the Circle Be Unbroken? 7:14 AM CDT - Posted By Myschyf
The first online game I ever played was a MUD called Arctic Sun -- or something like that. I didn't play it very long and it was about 8 or 9 years ago. You had to submit your name for approval to the powers that were and if they didn't like it you couldn't play. A pixie named Myschyf was deemed 'cute' and there I sat, facing the newbie forest, butterknife in hand. |
Article: Babes In Boyland 7:14 AM CDT - Posted By Cassandra
Its that time of year again, folks. E3 is just around the corner and you know what that means. Yup, its time for everyone to get together in Los Angeles for the industry's biggest convention. Time for the developers and publishers to show off their wares, check out the wares of their competitors and schmooze the press. Of course "E3" is also synonymous with "booth babes" as everyone tries to come up with the sexiest babe(s) at the show. So as the time draws near, I have to wonder just why it is that some companies feel the need to have booth babes in the first place. And I believe I have the answer. |
Article: Time for change? 7:14 AM CDT - Posted By Psychochild
Cassandra's editorial "About Cash Cows & Cynics" raised some interesting points about the game industry. To the outsider, there seems to be no logical reason for how it all works. I'm here to tell you that things aren't much clearer once you're on the inside. Luckily, game developers tend to be creative types and Cassandra has given me a forum to share some of my thoughts and speculation with you.

Article: About Cash Cows & Cynics 7:14 AM CDT - Posted By Cassandra
As most of you are aware by now, Origin Systems has recently had some high profile departures from their development teams. As significant as the exits by Richard Garriott, Raph Koster and Rich Vogel are, as well as the other two dozen who lost their jobs at OSI recently, things like this are pretty much run-of-the-mill as far as this industry goes. Job security in the games industry is notoriously lacking, what with companies like OSI laying off dozens at a time, not to mention other companies like Sierra, who have hacked deep and cut off entire limbs by killing off their own development houses. And yet you can't swing a dead orc without hitting a gamer who really wants to become a developer. |
Article: Clarification Regarding Origin's Internal Email 7:14 AM CDT - Posted By Cassandra
As most of you know, I broke the story yesterday about Richard Garriott leaving Origin. The story was posted both here and on Gamespy, where I also work as one of their news editors. Unfortunately, a confidential internal email was also attached to my news story, which was obtained by Gamespy from Lum The Mad's site (from which it has since been removed as well). Since the story had my byline, everyone thought I had posted the email, which many find to be an unethical action. In order to clarify the situation, I would like to share a message from the Gamespy management (with their permission): |
Article: Vault Network's Reprehensible Journalistic Ethics 7:14 AM CDT - Posted By Cassandra
Apparently, not only does the Vault Network believe they own the gaming community at large, they also seem to believe they now have exclusive ownership of news that anyone else writes. Read on for more details on their severe lack of ethics and standards. |
Article: The End Of An Era 7:14 AM CDT - Posted By Cassandra
The rumor hit like a ton of bricks. Surely it must be a pre-April Fool's joke, right? Official confirmation has just been received from David Swofford, in charge of Origin PR that Lord British is indeed leaving: |
Article: One Size Fits All Or A Horse Of A Different Color? 7:14 AM CDT - Posted By Cassandra
A rant and nothing but a rant...
For quite some time now, I’ve been noticing a trend. I’m sure just about everyone else has noticed it as well, and I’ve started to wonder what the cause of the problem really is, and how do we go about fixing it? |
